Why Lancaster
Lancaster is a charter city located in the Antelope Valley region of Southern California's western Mojave Desert, situated within northern Los Angeles County. Alongside its southern neighbor Palmdale, it serves as a central principal city for the surrounding valley. The municipality lies approximately 70 miles north of downtown Los Angeles via Interstate 5 and State Route 14, sitting just nine miles south of the Kern County border. Naturally separated from the Los Angeles Basin by the San Gabriel Mountains to the south, Lancaster is also bordered by the Tehachapi Mountains to its northwest.
The surrounding valley was historically home to the Paiute people, who utilized the central geography as a major trading hub between the California coast, the Central Valley, the Great Basin, and Arizona. Stagecoach mail routes later traversed the region before the Southern Pacific Railroad constructed a watering station and tracks, completing a rail line in 1876 that linked San Francisco and Los Angeles. Formal town development began in 1884 when Moses Langley Wicks purchased railroad property to plot out streets and lots. Early agricultural booms in wheat and barley were disrupted by a severe drought in 1894, though the local economy later stabilized following nearby discoveries of gold and borax.
Geographically covered largely by desert shrublands alongside areas of grassland, forest, and cropland, Lancaster experiences a semi-arid climate with low annual precipitation. Winters are cool to mild with occasional freezing temperatures at night, while surrounding mountain ranges receive winter snow. Summers bring hot, dry weather followed by cool evenings where native wildlife like barn owls and tree frogs can be heard. In the spring, abundant wildflower displays bloom across the landscape, showcasing California poppies, lupines, goldfields, fiddlenecks, and coreopsis.
Visitors to central Lancaster can explore The BLVD, a designated one-mile revitalized district along Lancaster Boulevard that blends historic structures with modern amenities. This walkable corridor hosts local boutiques, dining spots, a public library, and a performing arts center. The city also features dedicated business parks, car testing facilities in the surrounding region, and a minor league baseball stadium.
