Why Langfang
Langfang is a prefecture-level city situated in the central part of Hebei Province in northern China. Occupying an area of roughly 6,420 square kilometers on the North China Plain, it is the smallest prefecture-level city in Hebei by land area. Positioned nearly halfway between Beijing to the north and Tianjin to the east, the city also shares borders with Baoding and Cangzhou to the south and southwest. Its northern expanse is bounded by the Yanshan Mountains, while the Taihang Mountains lie to the west and the Bohai Sea to the east.
Administratively, Langfang is divided into two main urban districts—Guangyang and Anci—along with multiple counties, county-level cities, Dachang Hui Autonomous County, and an economic development zone. A distinct geographic feature is the Northern Three Counties exclave, which comprises Sanhe, Xianghe, and Dachang. Completely detached from the rest of Hebei Province, this exclave is located between Beijing and Tianjin, with parts of it integrated directly into Beijing's urban development.
Historically known as Tianjin Prefecture until 1973, the region was renamed before achieving prefecture-level city status in 1988. The area has played a role in significant historical events, including the Battle of Langfang in June 1900 during the Boxer Movement, where Chinese forces halted advancing European troops. Later, during the Second Sino-Japanese War in the summer of 1938, the region was part of the widespread Jidong People's Anti-Japanese Armed Uprising.
Langfang's modern economy centers around manufacturing, computer technology, and the digital industry. The city serves as the headquarters for national energy corporations, including the China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau and the ENN Group. Major educational and industrial facilities are prominent, such as Oriental University City—a campus project started in 1999 that accommodates approximately 30 universities and 50,000 students—and the Langfang Export Processing Zone, a specialized state-level area established within its economic and technological development zone.
Visitors can reach Langfang through several regional transportation links. Part of Beijing Daxing International Airport lies within Guangyang District, and the city is within driving distance of Beijing Capital International Airport, Tianjin Binhai International Airport, and Tianjin Port. Rail travel is provided by Guangyang station on the conventional Beijing–Shanghai railway, as well as the high-speed Langfang station on Jiefang Road, which opened in July 2011. Environmentally, the leeward slopes of the nearby Taihang Mountains can trap regional emissions, contributing to atmospheric air pollution in the area.
