Why Largo

Largo is a city situated in central Pinellas County, Florida, positioned between Tampa Bay to the northeast and the Intracoastal Waterway to the southwest. It borders Clearwater to the north, as well as the communities of Belleair, Belleair Bluffs, Pinellas Park, and Seminole. Built on terrain ranging from sea level to approximately 69 feet in elevation, the city features several natural water bodies and waterways, including Taylor Lake, Allen's Creek, and McKay Creek.

The area was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga people of the Safety Harbor culture before European arrival in the sixteenth century eventually led to their decline by the eighteenth century. Permanent American settlement expanded around the mid-nineteenth century, led by homesteaders who engaged in cattle ranching, citrus cultivation, and fishing. Following the arrival of the Orange Belt Railway in 1888, the nearby lake and settlement took the name Largo, with formal town incorporation occurring in 1905. Long recognized as a major center for processing and shipping agricultural products—earning the nickname Citrus City—Largo transitioned into a residential and service-oriented community during the mid-twentieth century.

Today, Largo features several public parks and cultural facilities. Largo Central Park, established on the former Pinellas County Fairgrounds, serves as a primary civic space housing the Largo Central Park Performing Arts Center. Across the street sits the Largo Public Library, while the nearby Largo Central Park Nature Preserve occupies land near the historic site of Lake Tolulu. Reflecting its commitment to urban forestry, Largo has maintained its designation as a National Arbor Day Tree City for decades.

The local environment is defined by a humid subtropical climate moderated by its position on the Pinellas peninsula. Proximity to both Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico helps maintain mild, drier conditions during the winter months relative to the Florida mainland. The majority of annual precipitation falls during the summer, driven by moist sea breezes moving inland from the Gulf.

In addition to its residential neighborhoods, Largo's economy relies heavily on services, retail sales, and light manufacturing. Healthcare is a key industry within the city, anchored by facilities such as Largo Medical Center. The municipality is also home to educational institutions, including the main campus of Schiller International University and the administrative headquarters for Pinellas County Schools.
