Why Lathrop
Lathrop is a Northern California city situated in San Joaquin County within the San Joaquin Valley. Located roughly 10 miles south of Stockton, the city encompasses an area of 21 square miles, with water covering a small portion of its terrain. Positioned at an elevation of 20 feet, the city lies at the intersection of Interstate 5 and California State Route 120. It is bordered by neighboring municipalities including Stockton, Manteca, Ripon, French Camp, and Tracy. Natural water features shape its layout, with the San Joaquin River running through the center of Lathrop and the Old River situated on its western side.
The area was originally settled around regional rail developments in the late 1860s. Platted around a train depot first known as Wilson's Station and a rail-switching wye, the community was formally named in 1869 to honor the family of Jane Lathrop, wife of Central Pacific Railroad president Leland Stanford. On September 6, 1869, the completion of the San Joaquin River Bridge at Mossdale established the last westbound rail connection to the Pacific coast for the transcontinental railroad, turning the settlement into a vital train stop. Growth slowed following an 1886 fire that destroyed the major local hotel alongside the transfer of rail machine shops to nearby Tracy. Following World War II, the town expanded through new housing developments and the arrival of industrial employers, leading to its official incorporation in 1989.
Points of interest in Lathrop often reflect its history and geographic setting. Mossdale Crossing Park marks the location where the final transcontinental rail link reached the Pacific coast, highlighted by California State Historical Marker number 781-7. Surrounding neighborhoods, including Mossdale Village and Stanford Crossing, incorporate this heritage into their design. Visitors can also access public recreation spaces such as the four-acre Leland and Jane Stanford Park, or utilize local civic amenities like the Lathrop Generations Center.
Lathrop serves as an accessible stop within San Joaquin County, positioned between the nearby submarkets of Stockton and Tracy. The city is served by public buses operated by the San Joaquin Regional Transit District. Additionally, regional rail transit is available via the Altamont Corridor Express, which stops at the Lathrop/Manteca commuter station.
