Why Layton
Layton is the most populous city in Davis County, Utah, positioned within the northern section of the Wasatch Front. Situated approximately 25 miles north of Salt Lake City and 15 miles south of Ogden, the municipality lies between the Wasatch Mountains to its east and the Great Salt Lake wetlands to its southwest. It shares borders with Syracuse, Clearfield, South Weber, and Kaysville, while directly adjoining Hill Air Force Base along its northern border.
Originally settled during the 1850s as an extension of Kaysville, the community was named in honor of Latter-day Saint settler Christopher Layton. Following a legal challenge regarding municipal property taxes that reached the United States Supreme Court in 1894, Layton separated to become an independent unincorporated area in 1902 and incorporated as a town in 1920. Its transition from a farming community into a growing residential and suburban city was driven by the establishment of Hill Air Force Base in 1940.
As an economic center for the region, Layton features a large hospitality district centered around the Davis Conference Center, alongside the Layton Hills Mall, the East Gate Business Park, and a commercial strip known as Restaurant Row. The city center area encompasses Layton Commons Park, the Davis Arts Council, the Heritage Museum of Layton, the Edward A. Kenley Centennial Amphitheater, and the Layton Surf 'N Swim facility. Other local institutions include a branch campus of Weber State University and the Layton Utah Temple, which was dedicated in 2024.
Recreational options include public parks such as Ellison Park, which features a splash pad and skate park, alongside shared pathways like the Bamberger Trail, D&RG Trail, and Kays Creek Parkway. East of U.S. Route 89, the 3.7-mile out-and-back Adams Canyon trail offers outdoor recreation through terrain populated by Douglas Fir, Gambel Oak, and Fern Bush, where hikers may spot local birds and chipmunks.
The local climate is defined by hot summers and cold winters, with winter snowfall frequently influenced by the Great Salt Lake. Layton is linked to surrounding destinations via Interstate 15, U.S. Route 89, state highways, and Utah Transit Authority services, including local buses and the FrontRunner commuter rail at Layton Station. These transit links provide straightforward connections to Antelope Island and Salt Lake City International Airport.
