Why Lee’s Summit

Lee’s Summit is a major suburban city located in Jackson and Cass counties in western Missouri, near the state's border with Kansas. Positioned directly adjacent to Kansas City, Independence, Greenwood, and Lake Winnebago, the city is set within the Wooded Osage Plains ecoregion, a landscape characterized by an undulating plain with low limestone escarpments, timber, and streams. Originally established as a rural agricultural center, the community shifted into a primary commuter suburb during the post-World War II period and is currently among the most populous municipalities in Missouri and the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Indigenous groups inhabited and hunted in the area for thousands of years prior to the Louisiana Purchase and the subsequent treaty cessions of Osage lands in 1825. American settlement expanded in the mid-nineteenth century, leading founder William Bullitt Howard to formally plat a town along the Missouri Pacific Railroad line in 1865. First named Strother, the town was officially renamed Lee’s Summit in 1868. The name honors local resident Pleasant John Graves Lea, while "Summit" marks the town's geographic elevation as the highest point along the rail route connecting Kansas City and St. Louis.

Several historic sites are located throughout the city. In 1912, lumber baron Robert A. Long began construction on Longview Farm, a historic 1,780-acre property in southwestern Lee's Summit, a portion of which was later redeveloped into the New Longview neighborhood. The city’s historic downtown features Veterans Memorial Hall, the venue where future U.S. President Harry S. Truman launched his first political campaign in 1922.

Visitors to Lee’s Summit will find an array of recreational, retail, and civic sites. Historic downtown Lee's Summit houses an active Amtrak passenger rail station alongside Green Street, a public gathering hub with an immersive playground, outdoor performance space, public artwork, and a venue for the local farmers market. Outdoor recreation is centered around the city's numerous parks and human-made reservoirs, notably Longview Lake on the Little Blue River, which features the Fred Arbanas Golf Course. Additional commercial attractions include major shopping complexes such as Summit Woods Crossing and Summit Fair.
