Why Libertador General San Martín

Libertador General San Martín, frequently referred to locally as Ledesma or Libertador, is a town situated in the Jujuy Province of northwestern Argentina. It serves as the departmental capital of Ledesma and is positioned along National Route 34, situated on the banks of the San Francisco River.

Established in 1899 under the original name Pueblo Nuevo Ledesma, the municipality was built on land contributed by the proprietors of the local sugar refinery. The layout around the central plaza was planned and subdivided a couple of years later, and by 1906, rail infrastructure reached the community with a station built between the urban center and the industrial complex. Early economic growth was bolstered by arrivals of Syrian and Lebanese immigrants. The settlement was officially renamed in 1950 to honor General San Martín. The Ledesma agricultural enterprise continues to be the primary employer, operating sugar cane fields, paper and cellulose mills, fruit production facilities, and biofuel processing units.

Tourism in the municipality has expanded in recent times, largely due to its close geographic proximity to Calilegua National Park, whose entrance lies just eight kilometers away. Outside of exploring the nearby national park, visitors to the area can access local thermal hot springs or utilize various trekking paths in the surrounding countryside.

Cultural heritage in the town includes traditions maintained by the indigenous Guaraní community. Each year, the community gathers to celebrate the Arete guazú ceremony, also known as Carnaval Grande or Pim Pim. Held at the base of a tree representing the deity Pachamama, the ritual involves offering items such as chicha, cigarettes, beverages, and basil as tokens of gratitude, accompanied by dancing amidst confetti, talcum powder, and streamers.

The town is also recognized as the birthplace of notable Argentine professional football players, including Ariel Ortega and José María Paz.
