Why Little Caesars Arena

Little Caesars Arena is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue situated in Midtown Detroit. Opened in September 2017, the facility serves as the primary home arena for both the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League and the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association. The venue is also slated to become the home of PWHL Detroit in 2026 and a Detroit WNBA team in 2029.

Designed by HOK with architectural inspiration from Montreal's Bell Centre, the eight-story building features a distinct deconstructed layout. Standalone outer structures contain retail stores, dining spots, ticket sales, and team offices. A clear glass roof bridges the space between these outer buildings and the arena itself, creating a glass-covered indoor street that serves as the main concourse. This concourse remains accessible to visitors year-round as a standalone venue, regardless of whether an event is underway. Outdoors, a large gathering plaza features a prominent video display.

Built as a bowl extending 40 feet below street level, the venue accommodates 19,515 spectators for ice hockey matches and 20,332 for basketball games. The interior features black seating, including a specialized gondola seating level suspended high above the main stands. A central 5,100-square-foot scoreboard hangs over the floor, complemented by 45 LED screens and over 16.5 million LEDs placed throughout the site. The exterior wall of the inner bowl can display animated video projections, while the facility also houses an internal 37,300-square-foot ice rink used for team practices and amateur hockey leagues.

The $862.9 million complex replaced the former Joe Louis Arena and the Palace of Auburn Hills, bringing all four of Detroit's major professional sports teams together within the municipal limits. For hockey games, the arena utilizes a compressed-air goal horn introduced ahead of the 2023–24 season to match the sound profile of the horn formerly used at Joe Louis Arena.

Located near Woodward Avenue and the Cass Corridor, the arena connects to the QLine streetcar system and sits near Comerica Park and Ford Field. It was conceived as the anchor for the District Detroit, a proposed sports and entertainment quarter spanning mixed-use neighborhoods. Nearby sites include corporate offices, academic institutions, and historic properties such as the renovated Eddystone apartment building.
