Why Little Cayman
Little Cayman is a low-lying island in the Caribbean Sea, situated approximately 60 miles northeast of Grand Cayman and five miles west of Cayman Brac. Measuring about 10 miles long and one mile wide, the mostly undeveloped island stays near sea level, reaching a peak height of 40 feet. It is the least populated of the Cayman Islands, with around 160 residents comprised of local Caymanians, seasonal homeowners, and expatriate workers from various countries.
First recorded by Christopher Columbus in 1503, the island was originally named Las Tortugas. Temporary 17th-century turtle fishing camps were abandoned in 1671 following a Spanish privateer raid, and permanent resettlement occurred in 1833 with the founding of Blossom Village. Historical livelihoods included phosphate mining, coconut harvesting, rope making, and shipbuilding. Following a destructive 1932 hurricane, many residents moved to Cayman Brac. Today, Blossom Village remains the main hub, containing a school, stores, park, and post office.
Little Cayman is famous for scuba diving, centered around north-coast dive sites like Jackson's Bight and Bloody Bay Wall, a dramatic, near-vertical underwater drop-off. The healthy reefs support sea turtles, rays, and Caribbean reef sharks, while dive operators actively cull invasive lionfish. Off the southwestern coast lies Owen Island, an uninhabited islet surrounded by shallow sandbars that can be reached by kayak, paddleboard, or boat across South Hole Sound for day trips, swimming, and snorkeling.
Terrestrial wildlife includes the Caribbean's largest colony of red-footed boobies at the 82-hectare Booby Pond Nature Reserve, as well as roughly 2,000 endangered Lesser Caymans iguanas viewable from a National Trust boardwalk. Tarpon Lake contains landlocked silver tarpon. For beachgoers, Point of Sand on the northeastern tip offers the island's primary sandy swimming area, complete with a protective reef and picnic facilities. Cultural events include a November heritage festival and a May agricultural show.
Access is provided by inter-island Cayman Airways flights arriving at Edward Bodden Airfield. Visitors must first enter the country via Grand Cayman or Cayman Brac to complete customs clearance. Local amenities include rental vehicles, a minibus service, three full-service restaurants, a clinic, a small museum, and the Central Caribbean Marine Institute. The island experiences hot summers, cooler winter conditions from late November to mid-March, and light rain showers during spring and autumn.
