Why Livonia

Livonia is a suburban city located in Wayne County, Michigan, situated approximately 20 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. Covering roughly 35.8 square miles, the community recorded a population of 95,535 residents in the 2020 census. It serves as an urbanized residential, commercial, and industrial center within the greater Detroit metropolitan region.

The local landscape is shaped by a network of creeks and rivers, highlighted by Newburgh Lake and Nankin Lake in the southern and southwestern sections of the city. These two bodies of water are linked by a river and run alongside Edward N. Hines Drive, a roadway commonly referred to by locals as Hines Drive. Water accounts for just 0.16 square miles of the municipality's total area.

Originally organized as a township in March 1835, the area was named after Livonia, New York, by eastern pioneers who settled the region. Early growth was marked by small hamlets and railway stops, including Elmwood along the Detroit, Lansing and Northern Railroad. Residents voted to officially incorporate Livonia as a city in May 1950, a move driven in part by the desire to collect tax revenues from the local Detroit Race Course. Over the following decades, the community welcomed diverse cultural groups, including a notable Middle Eastern and Christian Arab American population that began settling in the area during the late 1960s.

Commercial destinations in the city include Laurel Park Place, an enclosed shopping mall built in 1989, along with open-air retail developments such as Wonderland Village and Livonia Marketplace. Recreational facilities include the Jack E. Kirksey Livonia Community Recreation Center, organized youth hockey and soccer programs, and four local public library branches. Each June, the community holds the Livonia Spree, an anniversary festival featuring food vendors, amusement rides, live music, and fireworks.

In addition to its public school districts, the city hosts several institutions of higher learning, including Madonna University and Schoolcraft College. The area is also home to various religious institutions, such as Saint Mary's Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church.
