Step back into Atlanta's rich entertainment history as you explore the legacy of Loew's Grand Theatre. Originally built in 1893 by entrepreneur and Belgian consul Laurent DeGive as DeGive's Grand Opera House, this downtown landmark hosted many concerts and touring opera productions before being acquired by the Loews organization in 1927. Renovated by architect Thomas W.
Lamb into a single-screen, 2,088-seat movie theatre, it quickly earned fame under its marquee as 'The Home of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.' Film enthusiasts will appreciate its most celebrated milestone: hosting the legendary 1939 world premiere of Gone with the Wind, attended by most of the film's stars. The theater also hosted premier Atlanta showings for MGM classics such as Singin' in the Rain, Ben-Hur, and Doctor Zhivago. Although an extensive fire in 1978 damaged the historic structure—leading to the construction of the Georgia-Pacific Tower at Peachtree and Forsyth Streets—you can still see salvaged pieces of the theatre today.
Look for the original chandelier now hanging inside the Tabernacle concert venue, or travel five miles north to Houston's restaurant at 2166 Peachtree to view recycled bricks and a plaque of remembrance.
