Step back in time at the LSU Rural Life Museum, a captivating destination in Baton Rouge, United States, dedicated to preserving Louisiana's rich historical legacy. Situated within the 400-acre Burden Museum and Gardens—an agricultural research experiment station operated by Louisiana State University—this site commemorates the diverse cultural ancestry of the state, including French, Spanish, Native American, German, African, Acadian, and Anglo American heritage. The main experience unfolds outdoors across three distinct historical areas featuring 18th- and 19th-century buildings.

You will explore the Working Plantation complex, which focuses heavily on the lives of enslaved persons and includes a slave cabin, grist mill, and sugar house. In the Southern region section, discover pioneer cabins and a dogtrot house highlighting American settlers. The Acadian area features authentic Cajun-style homes, including one built by the Bergeron family between 1800 and 1815.

Before leaving, step inside the Barn, a relocated historic structure from Sabine Parish housing a massive indoor warehouse of 19th- and early 20th-century farming equipment, tools, and household artifacts. You can also explore the on-site Windrush Gardens and gift shop throughout the year.
