The current structure, which represents the parish's third building, was constructed between 1853 and 1856. Elevated to cathedral status by Pope John XXIII through a papal bull in July 1961, it officially became the seat of the diocese later that year under its first bishop, Most Rev. Robert Emmet Tracy.
