Why Lu’an
Situated in western Anhui Province between the Yangtze and Huaihe rivers, Lu'an—also historically known as Gaocheng—occupies a geographic region often referred to as Western Anhui. Positioned at the northern foot of the Dabie Mountains, the area features a varied terrain that transitions from high mountain ranges and rolling hills in the southwest to flat plains along the southern edge of the North China Plain in the northeast. The city shares borders with the provincial capital of Hefei, as well as adjacent prefectures in Anhui, Henan, and Hubei provinces.
The region experiences a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate defined by four distinct seasons. Winters are damp and cold, with average January temperatures around 3.1 °C, while summers are typically hot and humid, reaching July averages of 28.2 °C. The annual mean temperature sits at 16.4 °C, accompanied by roughly 1,920 hours of sunshine and over 1,139 millimeters of precipitation each year, most of which occurs between June and August. This environment nourishes extensive natural water systems, including major reservoirs, wetlands, and large tracts of forest.
Lu'an boasts a heritage connected to ancient states dating back to the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties. Its modern name stems from 121 AD during the Han Dynasty, when Emperor Wu created the Liu'an Kingdom to signify safety across six territories. The region developed through successive dynasties, including the Qin, Sui, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing eras, before eventually being reorganized as a prefecture-level city. Notable historical figures associated with the area include the early Han general Ying Bu, Republic-era political leader Duan Qirui, and classical scholar Fang Yong.
Visitors to Lu'an can explore a variety of outdoor activities, including bird watching, viewing spring blooms, mountain climbing, and river rafting. The prefecture is equally recognized for its historic sites and culinary specialties. Among these, Lu'an Guapian is a famous green tea harvested in the Dabie Mountains, distinctive for its melon-seed shape and clear, fresh flavor. Additional regional foods include wild kiwi fruit from Jinzhai, sweet Jinzhai chestnut cakes, savory shaobing pastries baked with meat and vegetables, and crispy fried shredded chicken buns.
Lu'an is connected to broader regional transportation networks via several key rail lines, including the Ningxi, Hewu, and Fuliu railways, as well as multiple expressways and national highways. Air travel is supported by Hefei Xinqiao International Airport, located approximately 70 kilometers away or about a 50-minute drive. Cargo and river travel are also facilitated along the navigable sections of the Huai River.
