Why Luleå
Luleå is a coastal city located in northern Sweden, serving as the capital of Norrbotten County. As the largest city in the county, it sits alongside a vast brackish water archipelago comprising 1,312 islands, surrounded by extensive forests and multiple rivers. The city also operates Sweden's seventh largest shipping port for freight, moving goods such as steel and ore across the region.
Established under a royal charter by King Gustavus Adolphus in 1621, the original settlement was located at present-day Gammelstad. Post-glacial land uplift made the initial bay too shallow for ships, forcing the city to relocate to its current position in 1649. After suffering severe blazes in 1653, 1657, and a devastating fire in 1887 that destroyed almost the entire town, Luleå was rebuilt. Its most prominent landmark is a 67-meter Neo-Gothic cathedral completed in 1893, which remains the tallest structure in the city.
Luleå is a major industrial and research hub, housing the country's northernmost technology university along with a large steelworks facility. It has also developed a prominent information technology sector, highlighted by Facebook's first international data center, which utilizes the area's cool climate and renewable energy sources. Retail centers around Storgatan and Kungsgatan streets, alongside three indoor shopping malls, including the historic Shopping mall designed by Ralph Erskine in 1955 as the world's first indoor venue of its kind.
Cultural life is centered around institutions like the Norrbottens Museum, the local theater, and Kulturens Hus, a facility containing a library, concert halls, and art exhibition space. The city hosts several notable gatherings, including the mid-March indoor festival Minus 30-festivalen, the summer Luleå Hamnfestival in the north harbor, and the outdoor August music event Musikens makt. A distinctive winter art form features live musical performances where artists play instruments constructed entirely from ice inside an igloo.
The area features a subarctic climate with short, mild summers and prolonged, cold, snowy winter periods. Summer months bring near-constant daylight, with temperatures occasionally reaching 30 °C, while clear skies between September and March offer opportunities to observe the northern lights. Visitors can reach Luleå via Luleå/Kallax Airport, which provides frequent domestic and regional connections, as well as passenger train services linking the city to Stockholm, Narvik, and regional destinations.
