Why Lynn

Lynn is a coastal city on the Atlantic Ocean located in Essex County, Massachusetts, positioned just north of the Boston city border. As a primary economic and cultural hub of the region's North Shore, the city features oceanfront views, historic neighborhoods, and expansive public open spaces. It sits along the southernmost section of the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway and combines a dense urban landscape with significant parkland.

Originally inhabited by the Naumkeag people, European settlers established a community here in 1629 originally known as Saugus, which was renamed Lynn in 1637. The municipality emerged as an early industrial center, gaining fame for its tanneries and shoe manufacturing, which supplied footwear for soldiers during the American Revolutionary War and eventually led to world-leading shoe production. In the late nineteenth century, Lynn also became a birthplace of the early electrical and jet engine manufacturing industries through General Electric. The city played a role in social history as well, serving as a residence for abolitionist Frederick Douglass and pioneer physician Esther Hill Hawks.

Visitors to Lynn can explore a range of historic architecture and natural reserves. The seaside Diamond Historic District displays prominent nineteenth-century coastal estates and beach cottages built when the shoreline was a popular summer retreat. Nature enthusiasts can visit the 2,200-acre Lynn Woods Reservation, designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, as well as the High Rock Reservation designed by his sons. Additional outdoor destinations include the oceanfront Lynn Shore Reservation and Lynn Heritage State Park.

In modern times, downtown Lynn has experienced revitalization centered on a state-designated arts and culture district. Many former shoe factories and industrial buildings have been adapted into loft spaces, sitting alongside public art projects, performance venues, and local dining options. Located within the Greater Boston inner core, the city connects rich industrial heritage with active cultural spaces and convenient access to the surrounding region.
