Why Madison Heights
Madison Heights is an inner-ring suburb located in Oakland County, Michigan, situated roughly 12 miles north of downtown Detroit. Covering an all-land area of approximately seven square miles, the city forms an integral part of the Metro Detroit region. It shares borders with Troy to the north, Royal Oak to the west, Hazel Park to the south, and Warren to the east, with Dequindre Road along its eastern edge serving as the dividing line between Oakland and Macomb counties.
Originally part of Royal Oak Township, Madison Heights became an incorporated city following a popular vote in January 1955, officially adopting its municipal charter in December of that same year. Local government operations were initially centered at former township offices on John R Road before relocating to a newly dedicated municipal building on West Thirteen Mile Road in April 1963.
The city is well integrated into the regional highway grid along the Interstate 75 and Interstate 696 corridors. Interstate 75 runs north to south through the western side of the community, while Interstate 696 spans the southern boundary, converging at a shared interchange on the southwestern border. The municipality maintains more than 100 miles of local roadways. Key civic infrastructure in the area includes the George W. Kuhn Retention and Treatment Basin, which manages regional stormwater.
Madison Heights features a large commercial and industrial presence within Oakland County's Automation Alley, encompassing more than 1,300 businesses, seven industrial parks, 23 shopping centers, and 11 hotels. Notable local establishments include the Chinese Cultural Center and the 38,000-square-foot 168 Asian Mart, which is the largest Asian supermarket in southeastern Michigan. The city is also home to the corporate headquarters of Hungry Howie's Pizza, as well as the Telway Hamburger System, a long-standing 24-hour eatery recognized for its sliders.
Educational options serving the community include two public school systems—Madison District Public Schools and Lamphere Public Schools—alongside private institutions such as Bishop Foley Catholic High School and Four Corners Montessori Academy. Community access to cultural and educational materials is provided by the Madison Heights Public Library.
