Why Magna

Magna is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah, situated directly south of the Great Salt Lake and just northeast of the Oquirrh Mountains. Occupying approximately 7.4 square miles of land, the community sits on the western edge of the Salt Lake Valley grid system. Its natural landscape is shaped by the nearby Oquirrh range and local drainages such as Coon Creek, which flows out of Coon Canyon north and west through the city toward the Great Salt Lake.

Pioneer settlement in the area began in 1851, leading to the formation of an agricultural hamlet called Pleasant Green in 1868. By the early twentieth century, the expansion of regional copper mining reshaped the community into an industrial enclave. The Utah Copper Company built the Magna Mill in 1906, taking its name from the Latin word for "great." Other mining infrastructure followed, drawing numerous immigrant workers from Eastern Europe and beyond who settled in distinct neighborhoods around the town center. The township officially adopted the name Magna in 1915, gradually transitioned into a suburban area over the mid-to-late twentieth century, and officially became a city in 2024.

Visitors to Magna can view historic landmarks that highlight its rich history. The revitalized Historic Main Street features early twentieth-century storefronts and classic architecture, making it a recurring location for various film and television productions. Culturally notable sites include The Empress Theatre, a performing venue added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, and the Pleasant Green Cemetery, established in 1883 in the Oquirrh foothills.

In addition to its historic roots in mining, the city's economic landscape includes aerospace manufacturing, featuring a solid rocket motor production facility operated by Northrop Grumman. Magna is easily accessible via State Route 201, an expressway along the city's northern boundary that connects with Interstate 80 to the west. Local arterial roads include State Route 171 (3500 South) and State Route 111 (8400 West). Public transportation is provided by the Utah Transit Authority via bus route 35, which loops through Magna's Main Street and offers connections to the TRAX light rail system.
