Mani Bhavan 🇮🇳

You can step into living history at Mani Bhavan (meaning "Jewel House"), a museum and historic building on Laburnum Road in Mumbai's Gamdevi precinct. From 1917 to 1934, this mansion—originally belonging to Gandhi's friend Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri—served as Gandhi's Mumbai headquarters. When you visit, you are exploring the very focal point where Gandhi launched major political efforts, including the Non-Cooperation, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, Khadi, and Khilafat Movements, as well as his association with the charkha and the Home Rule Movement.

Inside, you will discover a ground-floor library featuring a statue of the Mahatma where guests offer tributes. Walk up the picture-lined staircase to the first floor to browse a photo gallery covering his life from childhood to his assassination, alongside historic press clippings. On the second floor, look through a glass partition into the room Gandhi actually used, which preserves his bed on the floor, two spinning wheels, and a book.

Opposite his room sits a hall displaying lifelong photographs and paintings. You can also view the historic terrace where he was arrested on January 4, 1932. Maintained by the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi since 1955, this landmark has welcomed historic figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama.
