Why Manila

Manila is the capital and second-most populous city of the Philippines, situated on the eastern shore of Manila Bay on the island of Luzon. The Pasig River meanders through the heart of the city, splitting it into northern and southern sections. As a highly urbanized metropolis, Manila is among the most densely populated cities in the world, housing nearly two million residents within its municipal boundaries. It forms the core of the larger capital region known as Metro Manila, which encompasses major commercial areas like the Makati Central Business District and the expansive Quezon City.

The designation of Manila stems from the local term Maynilà, which historical interpretations attribute either to a prevalence of dye-producing indigo plants or to nilad shrubs native to mangrove environments. Human history around the region dates back thousands of years, with early inhabitants eventually participating in vibrant maritime trade networks with China's Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. By the 13th century, a fortified settlement and commercial district operated along the Pasig River, later adopting Islamic traditions through close dynastic ties with Brunei.

European colonization commenced in 1571 following the arrival of Spanish forces under Miguel López de Legazpi, who established the stone-walled district of Intramuros over the original settlement. Designated as the capital of the Spanish East Indies, Manila became an essential early global city due to its central position in the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade. This vast commercial route spanned the Pacific Ocean, linking Asia to the Americas by exchanging Latin American silver for Chinese silk, Indian gems, and Southeast Asian spices. The city also served as a unique trading site where Chinese and Japanese merchants could conduct business during periods of trade restrictions.

Over the centuries, Manila was shaped by diverse international influences and conflicts, including a brief British occupation during the Seven Years' War. Spanish forces maintained fortified defenses in Intramuros while interacting with surrounding districts, such as Binondo, which stands as the world's oldest Chinatown. Under American administration, Manila was designated as the country's first chartered city in 1901, later securing full municipal autonomy in 1949. Today, the city is organized into 16 administrative districts and remains an important global financial center, even as it manages environmental pressures like natural disaster exposure, land subsidence, and rising sea levels.
