Why Manteca

Manteca is a city in San Joaquin County, located within California's Central Valley. Situated 76 miles east of San Francisco, 18 miles northwest of Modesto, and 15 miles south of Stockton, it lies at a crossroads of major transportation corridors, including Interstate 5, State Route 99, and State Route 120. Neighboring communities include Lathrop, Ripon, Escalon, and Tracy.

The city encompasses a total area of 21.4 square miles, almost entirely composed of land. Manteca experiences a hot-summer Mediterranean climate characterized by exceptionally dry, hot summers and rainy winters interspersed with fair weather. Winter months occasionally bring seasonal tule fog, which can result in long stretches of chilly conditions where daily temperatures remain below 46 degrees Fahrenheit.

Originally inhabited by the Yokuts people, the settlement was formally founded in 1861 when Joshua Cowell claimed roughly 1,000 acres. After the Central Pacific Railroad laid track through the area in 1873, local residents sought to name their train stop Cowell Station. Because another station shared that name near Tracy, the community selected Monteca, which was mistakenly printed as Manteca—the Spanish word for lard—by the railroad company. The misspelled name was retained, and the town was incorporated as a city in 1918, with Cowell serving as its first mayor.

Historically anchored by agriculture, Manteca was featured in 1935 photographs taken for the Farm Security Administration by photojournalist Dorothea Lange, depicting the local Dimotakis family farm. Starting in the late twentieth century, rising Bay Area housing costs transformed the agricultural community into a popular residential area for commuters, leading to significant population growth.

Manteca refers to itself as the Family City and hosts the Not Forgotten Memorial Day Event every year on the Sunday before Memorial Day. Recognized as the largest veterans' commemoration on the West Coast, the gathering draws more than 20,000 visitors. Public transportation in the municipality is served by local buses operating out of the Manteca Transit Center and regional commuter service provided via the Altamont Corridor Express rail line at the nearby Lathrop/Manteca station.
