Why Maoming

Maoming is a coastal prefecture-level city situated in southwestern Guangdong province, China, facing the South China Sea to the south. Positioned east of Zhanjiang, west of Yangjiang, and southwest of Yunfu, it lies 362 kilometers from the provincial capital of Guangzhou. Named after Pan Maoming, a Jin dynasty Taoist physician and scholar born in Gaozhou, the surrounding area was officially given its current designation by imperial decree in 598 AD during the Sui dynasty.

Historically, the region was inhabited by the Baiyue people before being divided into administrative commanderies under the Qin dynasty. Maoming County was created around 600 AD under Sui rule, and later formed part of Gaozhou Prefecture during the Qing era. Elevated to a county-level city in 1959, modern Maoming encompasses urban areas like Maonan and Dianbai alongside the county-level cities of Xinyi, Gaozhou, and Huazhou.

The city features a diverse demographic population that includes minority groups such as the Yao, Zhuang, and Miao. Linguistic heritage varies across the territory, with residents in southern Maoming speaking a Min dialect closely related to the Leizhou dialect, while northern communities predominantly use the Gaoyang dialect of Cantonese alongside Mandarin. Hakka is also spoken by a portion of the local populace.

Visitors to Maoming can explore various natural and coastal attractions across its 128.1-kilometer coastline. Located 25 kilometers from the urban center, the No. 1 Shoal of China Vacation Area features miles of fine sandy beaches framed by shelter belts, offering space for sailboarding, parachute gliding, and national or international beach volleyball competitions. Offshore lies Chicken Island, a 1.9-square-kilometer destination recognized for clear waters, coral reefs, and various diving opportunities. Additionally, nature enthusiasts can visit the Tianmashan Eco-tourist Area.

Cultural and agricultural sites further enrich the destination. The Temple of Madam Xian, constructed in 1535 to honor an ancient female Baiyue leader, houses historical statues, sculptures, and stone carvings. As a major center for litchi production, the city features the Genzi Litchi Cultural Tourist Area. Regional culinary specialties include Huazhou Baiqie chicken, Gaozhou salted chicken, Fenpi, Genzi beef rice noodles, and Xinyi Huaixiang chicken. Travelers can access Maoming via first-class buses or trains from Guangzhou, expressway routes connecting to the Maozhan, Kaiyang, and Fokai highways, or through several major railway lines.
