Why Maryland Heights
Maryland Heights is a suburb situated west-northwest of St. Louis within St. Louis County, Missouri. Encompassing a total area of 23.35 square miles—comprising 21.83 square miles of land and 1.52 square miles of water—the municipality was officially incorporated in 1985. The heritage of the local community dates back further, with historic landmarks such as Zion Lutheran Church beginning as a grade school in 1869 before officially establishing its congregation in 1883.
Outdoor recreation and green space are prominent features throughout the area. The municipality maintains several park facilities, including Aquaport, a waterpark opened in 1999, along with Sportport and Dogport. Vago Community Park features playgrounds, a splash pad, walking paths, sand volleyball, and a brick Veterans Memorial Walk. Other municipal grounds include Gerald A. Eise Memorial Park, Quiet Hollow Park, and Parkwood Park, which contains a 0.7-mile paved trail fitted with exercise stations. Additionally, St. Louis County operates Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park, a former early 20th-century summer resort area that houses a 320-acre lake and the Dripping Springs waterfall.
The city contains several major sports, aviation, and performance venues. The Centene Community Ice Center, opened in 2019, houses three indoor ice rinks and a covered outdoor rink, serving as the practice site for the St. Louis Blues and home ice for Lindenwood University's hockey teams. Live music performance takes place at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater, an outdoor space accommodating up to 20,000 spectators across open lawn seating and fixed seats. Located on the city's western boundary in the Riverport district is Hollywood Casino St. Louis. Aviation history is preserved at the Creve Coeur Airport's Historic Aircraft Restoration Museum, which exhibits a large collection of airplanes from the 1920s and 1930s.
Commercial developments and corporate hubs form a core part of the local economy. Westport Plaza, a complex measuring over 700,000 square feet situated at Page Avenue and Interstate 270, contains dining, business spaces, and entertainment venues. Notable corporate facilities include the North Campus of Edward Jones Investments and the headquarters of World Wide Technology. Freight transportation across the municipality is supported by the Central Midland Railway, which operates along a historic rail corridor originally constructed in 1870.
