If you are exploring the historic Steglitz district of Berlin, a visit to Matthew Church (Matthäuskirche) offers a glimpse into local 19th-century history and community resilience. Constructed between 1876 and 1880, this Protestant church was designed by architect Emil Gette to replace an earlier village church that had become dilapidated and too small for the growing population. Upon its inauguration in 1880, it featured three distinct naves.

Today, the site stands as a protected historical ensemble—comprising not just the church building itself, but also its parish hall, rectory, and adjacent cemetery. While modern visitors can admire its architectural design, the church's history also reflects the dramatic events of the 20th century. During an air raid on March 1, 1945, pressure waves destroyed nearly all of the original church windows.

It subsequently underwent a major renovation in 1957 under the direction of architect Dr. Gabler. Rich in local heritage, Matthew Church serves as an important architectural and historical landmark in Berlin, deeply tied to the neighborhood's past and named past leaders like its first pastor, Arthur Wuthenow.
