Located on the Makkah al-Mukkarramah road along the Jeddah–Makkah Highway, the Mecca Gate (also known as the Gate of Mecca or Qur'an Gate) serves as a grand arch gateway marking the entrance to Mecca, the birthplace of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Built in 1979 from a design by Dia Aziz Dia and architect Samir Elabd, this monumental structure signifies the official boundary of the city's haram area, beyond which non-Muslims are prohibited from entering.
When you visit, you will see a striking architectural main piece designed as Islam's Holy Book, the Qur'an, resting atop a traditional rehal book stand. Constructed primarily of reinforced concrete alongside materials like wood, glass, and plastic, the gate features intricate Islamic luminous mosaics and vitrails beneath its arches.
Below the soaring archways, palm trees line the divided four-lane highway island, accompanied by lower trees, ornamental bushes, and neatly sculpted boxwood set within tidy gardens. Complete with perimeter fences, small parking lots, and auxiliary facilities extending into a developing complex, the entire structure is beautifully decorated with diverse patterns and comes alive at night with varied illuminated lighting displays.
