Located on old Jeddah's main street, Suq al-Alawi in the Al-Balad district, Nasseef House offers you a captivating glimpse into Saudi Arabia's vibrant history and Red Sea architectural heritage. Built between 1872 and 1881 for governor Omar Nasseef Effendi, this grand historic residence later accommodated King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud after he entered the city in 1925, functioning as a lively social salon for local merchants and consuls.
When you explore the multi-story structure, you will admire traditional Jeddah elements like large wooden bay windows (rawashin), intricate tilework, wood decorations, and elegant Arabic calligraphy. The house features an irregular plan built around a central hall, containing 106 rooms, some displaying fine artworks.
As you climb the remarkably wide, flat main stairway—designed so animals like donkeys or camels could carry provisions up to the fifth-floor kitchen—you can discover unique architectural features, including a third-floor domed shower, ground-floor cisterns, and a light seventh-floor pavilion crafted to catch cooling breezes. Outside on the northern square, do not miss the historic neem tree, which historically made this famous residence known locally as "The House with the Tree." Today, the preserved building welcomes travelers as a cultural center holding engaging lectures and public exhibitions.
