Why Melrose

Melrose is a suburban city situated in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, within the Greater Boston metropolitan area. Located approximately seven miles north of Boston, the community occupies a total area of 4.8 square miles and sits within a triangle formed by Interstates 93 and 95 alongside U.S. Route 1. It shares borders with the neighboring municipalities of Malden, Saugus, Stoneham, and Wakefield.

The landscape of Melrose features a variety of natural landmarks, open terrain, and bodies of water. Ell Pond is located near the middle of the city as its largest water body, while Swains Pond and Towners Pond lie on the eastern side. Outdoor areas and scenic sites across the city include Sewall Woods, Mount Hood, Boston Rock, Pine Banks Park, and the eastern segment of the Middlesex Fells Reservation.

First explored by European settlers in 1628, the territory was originally called Ponde Fielde or Mystic Side due to its local geography before joining Charlestown and later Malden. The arrival of three rail stops in 1845 converted the agricultural community of North Malden into a residential area for Boston commuters. It separated from Malden to become the town of Melrose in 1850—taking its name from a Scottish burgh—and was officially incorporated as a city in 1900. Historical architectural landmarks remain prominent, including the 1873 town hall, while Downtown Melrose and the local public library are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Melrose comprises several distinct neighborhoods, including Cedar Park, Downtown Melrose, the East Side, Horace Mann, Melrose Highlands, Mount Hood, Oak Grove/Pine Banks, and Wyoming. Notable local institutions include the Mount Hood Golf Club, the Milano Senior Center, and MelroseWakefield Hospital, a regional medical facility known historically for pioneering surgical advancements and same-day medical procedures.

Visitors and commuters reach Melrose via several transportation options. The city is connected to regional transit through three MBTA Commuter Rail stations on the Haverhill Line—Wyoming Hill, Melrose/Cedar Park, and Melrose Highlands—alongside local bus lines and proximity to the MBTA Orange Line subway at Oak Grove station. The city's historic streets and public spaces have also frequently served as filming locations for major feature films and television documentaries.
