Located at No.18 Hejia Lane, Ruyi'an Street in the Hongqiao District of Tianjin, the Memorial Hall of the Boxer Uprising (also known as Luzutang Museum or the Tianjin Boxer Rebellion Memorial) is the only museum in China dedicated entirely to the Boxer Rebellion. When you visit, you will step into a historic Taoist temple originally constructed in 1719 to honor the immortal Lü Dongbin and later rebuilt during the Kangxi period of the Qing dynasty. This site holds tremendous historical significance: in 1900, Boxer leader Cao Futian established his headquarters right inside this old temple.
Today, you can explore detailed exhibitions focusing on the history of the Boxer Rebellion, its organizational structure, and its prominent leaders. As you walk through the complex—restored and reopened as a memorial hall in 1985—you can reflect on the dramatic events of 1900. It was here at the main entrance that an altar once stood where leaders burned charms for followers to drink in strong wine, believing it rendered them immune to enemy bullets, while the Red Lanterns gazed at setting suns to invoke lightning.
