Why Midland
Midland is a West Texas city situated within the Permian Basin on the southern edge of the Llano Estacado plains. Serving as the seat of Midland County, with small sections stretching into Martin County, it is widely recognized as a primary administrative hub for American oil and natural gas production. Nicknamed "The Tall City," its distinctive downtown skyline was largely constructed during regional energy booms and features prominent high-rises such as the 24-story Bank of America Building.
The area experiences a hot semi-arid climate characterized by sweltering summer months and cool to mild winters. Rainfall is sparse, averaging around 13.5 inches annually with most precipitation arriving during the summer season. High temperatures routinely exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit on over one hundred days each year, while winter cold spells are typically brief and rarely result in prolonged freezing conditions.
Established in 1881 as Midway Station along the Texas and Pacific Railway, the settlement was named for its position halfway between Fort Worth and El Paso before changing its name to Midland in 1884. Initially a prominent cattle shipping hub, the community was permanently transformed following the 1923 discovery of oil in the Permian Basin. Midland also shares deep ties to American political history as the former home of U.S. presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, as well as former First Lady Laura Bush.
Visitors can explore several notable cultural and historic destinations across the city. The Bush Family Home State Historic Site offers insight into the prominent political family, while the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum showcases the history and technology of energy development alongside custom race cars designed by resident Jim Hall. The Museum of the Southwest, located inside the historic 1934 Turner Mansion, features artwork by the Taos Society of Artists, Audubon engravings, a planetarium, and a children's museum. Additionally, the Midland County Historical Museum houses replicas of the prehistoric "Midland Man" skeleton.
Cultural life is further enriched by local performing arts organizations and academic centers. The Midland-Odessa Symphony and Chorale delivers masterwork and pops concerts, while the Midland Community Theatre presents a full slate of annual productions, including its Summer Mummers shows at the Yucca Theatre. The McCormick Gallery at Midland College regularly displays creative works by students, faculty, and visiting artists.
For recreation, sports enthusiasts can watch minor league baseball with the Midland RockHounds at Momentum Bank Ballpark, attend soccer matches featuring West Texas FC at Astound Broadband Stadium, or follow the athletic teams of Midland College.
