Why Miramar

Located in southern Broward County, Florida, Miramar is a notable suburban municipality situated within the greater Miami metropolitan area. Covering a total area of 31.3 square miles, the city consists of 29.5 square miles of land and 1.8 square miles of water, which makes up roughly five and a half percent of its total geography. According to official census statistics, Miramar ranks as the fourth-largest city in Broward County, the sixth-largest in the Miami metropolitan region, and the fourteenth-largest across the state of Florida.

The history of Miramar as an incorporated municipality began on May 26, 1955. Taking its name from the Miramar neighborhood in Havana, Cuba, the city saw its inaugural mayor and council members appointed directly by the governor of Florida in June of that year. Local municipal elections were subsequently established in 1959. The city originally operated under a strong mayor form of government until local voters approved a referendum in 1990 to transition to a commission–city manager governance structure.

Demographically, Miramar is distinguished by a diverse population with strong cultural ties to various regions across the Caribbean and Latin America. The municipality features prominent populations of Jamaican, Cuban, Haitian, Colombian, Dominican, and Trinidadian residents. Additionally, the city is integrated into the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood media market.

The city serves as a hub for commercial enterprises and federal administrative operations. Spirit Airlines relocated its headquarters to Miramar in November 1999. The city also hosts a major 330,000-square-foot Leadership in Energy & Environment Design facility set on a 20-acre site. Dedicated in memory of two fallen federal agents from a 1986 shootout, this building houses the Federal Bureau of Investigation Miami field office alongside a General Services Administration office.

For outdoor events and local gatherings, the city features Miramar Regional Park, which contains the Miramar Regional Park Amphitheater, an open-air venue spanning 90,000 square feet. Academic institutions are also situated throughout the city, including public high schools such as Miramar High School and Everglades High School. Higher education facilities include Broward College at Miramar Town Center, Florida International University at Miramar West Center, Nova Southeastern University, and the University of Florida South Florida MBA campus.
