Why Miryang
Miryang is a city located in South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, positioned along the Nakdong River basin midway between Daegu and Busan. The municipality is bordered by Cheongdo to the north, Changnyeong to the west, Ulsan to the east, and Changwon, Gimhae, and Yangsan to the south. Its terrain features craggy hills and low mountains sloping from the Yeongnam Alps down to the fertile southern plains of the Miryang River valley. Gajisan, standing at 1,240 meters on the northern border, is the highest peak in the area.
First recorded during the Samhan period as Mirimidongguk, the area was later annexed by Silla and eventually named Miryang at the start of the Joseon Dynasty. Positioned along the Great Yeongnam Road, it served as an important transportation point. During the early 20th century, the region became a focal point for the Korean independence movement, marked by widespread participation in the 1919 March First Movement and an anti-colonial bombing at the local police station in 1920.
Visitors to Miryang can explore a variety of scenic natural landscapes and historic structures. Overlooking the Miryang River, the Yeongnamnu Pavilion is celebrated for its views and featured in Joseon-era poetry. In the northeastern mountains, Gajisan Provincial Park encompasses part of the Yeongnam Alps and includes the Eoreumgol ice valley. Cultural landmarks include Yerim Seowon, dedicated to 15th-century scholar Kim Chong-jik, and the Pyochungsa temple complex, which houses Pyochung Seowon and South Korean National Treasure No. 75. Additionally, the ancient Yangyangji reservoir, initially created during the Silla period for rice paddy irrigation, remains a popular picturesque destination.
Miryang experiences a relatively mild, temperate climate with an annual average temperature of 14.4 °C, though its river valleys are vulnerable to monsoon and typhoon flooding. As a major transit node, the city is accessible via the Daegu-Busan Expressway and national highway network. It is also served by the Gyeongbu and Gyeongjeon rail lines, with Miryang Station being the sole stop for KTX express trains between Daegu and Busan. Regional travel is further supported by smaller passenger stations at Samnangjin, Sangdong, and Nakdonggang.
