Why Morón
Morón is an Argentine city serving as the capital of the Morón district within the Greater Buenos Aires metropolitan area. Located approximately 20 kilometers west of downtown Buenos Aires, the city functions as a prominent suburban hub. Travelers can easily reach the destination from the national capital via bus routes along Avenida Rivadavia, National Highway 7, or the Sarmiento railway line.
Originally inhabited by the Querandí people, the land was granted to Juan Ruiz de Ocaña by Captain Juan de Garay in the late sixteenth century. The locality subsequently developed into an important waypoint along the Royal Road between Buenos Aires and Córdoba, enhanced by the construction of a bridge over Morón Brook in 1771. Officially established in 1785 as Cañada de Morón, the settlement became a popular retreat for prosperous visitors. During the nineteenth century, the area hosted the 1829 Battle of Márquez Bridge and transitioned from cattle ranching to wheat farming. Following the arrival of the railway in 1859, urban planner Pedro Benoit was commissioned to design a master plan for the expanding town.
Demographic growth was further driven by European settlement, particularly Italian immigrants who formed a local mutual aid society and inspired the opening of a consulate, along with a smaller Jewish population. Notable historic structures include the Cathedral of Inmaculada Concepción del Buen Viaje, which began hosting services in 1871 and was completed in 1885, serving as the seat of the regional Roman Catholic bishop. Additionally, the Rationalist City Hall was completed in 1939, featuring an architectural design by Alejandro Bustillo and decorative sculptures by José Fioravanti.
Key public points of interest include Plaza Libertador San Martín, the central square laid out by Benoit, and the Argentine Air Force's National Aeronautics Museum. The city underwent significant industrial expansion mid-century, tripling its population between 1947 and 1960, which led to the founding of the private Universidad de Morón in 1960. The city also maintains a strong sporting presence through its local football club, Deportivo Morón, established in 1947.
