The Museum of Modern Art, widely recognized as MoMA, is a prominent cultural institution situated in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, along 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Renowned for its influential role in shaping the history of modern art, particularly European modernism, the institution houses an expansive collection originating from the late nineteenth century through the present day. Visitors can explore more than 200,000 works encompassing painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, prints, architecture, design, illustrated books, film, and electronic media.

The museum was initially conceived in 1929 by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Lillie P. Bliss, and Mary Quinn Sullivan. Opening shortly after the Wall Street Crash in modest rented spaces at the Heckscher Building on Fifth Avenue, the institution operated across several temporary locations during its early years due to initial financial constraints. It established a permanent home on West 53rd Street in 1939 on land provided by John D. Rockefeller Jr. Designed in the International Style by architects Philip L. Goodwin and Edward Durell Stone, the venue was among the earliest museums to adopt a multidisciplinary structure with dedicated departments for photography and motion pictures.

Over the decades, the museum hosted landmark exhibitions that reinterpreted modern masters and diverse traditions, including major historical retrospectives on Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso, as well as influential surveys of Native American arts and Latin American architecture. Among its signature features is the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, initially created in 1939 and redesigned by architect Philip Johnson in 1953. The complex also maintains a extensive library containing roughly 300,000 books and exhibition catalogs, over 1,000 periodical titles, and tens of thousands of ephemera files alongside archival primary source materials.

To accommodate its expanding collection, the complex underwent substantial renovations led by notable architects such as César Pelli and Yoshio Taniguchi, which significantly expanded exhibition space and added the Peggy and David Rockefeller Building alongside research facilities. The institution also merged with the P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in Queens to offer experimental contemporary programming. Welcoming millions of international and domestic visitors each year as one of the most visited art museums in the United States, the site features modern gallery spaces, auditoriums, a bookstore, and two on-site restaurants.
