Rockefeller Center is a prominent 22-acre commercial complex situated in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City, spanning the area between 48th and 51st Streets from Fifth Avenue to Sixth Avenue. The expansive development comprises 19 total buildings arranged around a recessed central plaza and a private thoroughfare known as Rockefeller Plaza. The complex includes original Art Deco structures as well as later International Style towers and an addition across 51st Street.

The site was initially owned by physician David Hosack in the early 19th century as a botanical garden before being acquired by Columbia University. In 1928, developer John D. Rockefeller Jr. leased the property, initially planning a new home for the Metropolitan Opera. After the opera canceled its move following the 1929 stock market crash, plans were adapted to create a vast mass-media and commercial center. Construction began in 1931, using immense quantities of Indiana limestone, and the original complex was completed in 1939.

The development is organized into several distinct sections. Along Sixth Avenue lies Radio City, centered around 30 Rockefeller Plaza and the Radio City Music Hall, which was built for media enterprises like NBC. Facing Fifth Avenue is the International Complex, created to house foreign-based tenants with buildings for British, French, and Italian interests. Other original buildings historically accommodated major publishing companies, news organizations, and corporate offices.

Visitors to Rockefeller Center can experience a wide array of notable features, including an extensive underground pedestrian concourse connecting the property. The sunken central plaza features a famous ice-skating rink, established in 1936, along with the Prometheus statue erected in 1934. The site is also renowned for its public artwork, an observation deck, and the annual display of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

Designated a New York City landmark in 1985 and a National Historic Landmark in 1987, the complex stands as one of the largest private construction projects ever undertaken. Today, the property and its land are controlled by Tishman Speyer, maintaining its status as a major cultural, commercial, and tourist destination.
