Why Nanchong
Nanchong is a major prefecture-level city situated in the northeastern portion of Sichuan Province, China. Positioned along the Jialing River—a prominent tributary of the Yangtze River—the municipality covers a land area of nearly 12,500 square kilometers. The surrounding landscape consists primarily of rolling hills with approximately 25 percent woodland coverage. Ranking as Sichuan's second most populous city after Chengdu, Nanchong's main administrative center is centered in Shunqing District.
The region possesses a rich historical background, having formed part of the ancient Ba state prior to its conquest by the Qin in 314 BC. Anhan County was instituted here in 202 BC by Emperor Gaozu during the Han dynasty. Over the following centuries, the area underwent several name revisions, including a designation as Guozhou, or "fruit state," in 621 AD under the Tang dynasty. This era inspired the city's lasting nickname, Guocheng (Fruit City), before the territory was formally designated as Nanchong in 742 AD.
Demographically, the local population is overwhelmingly Han, though dozens of minority ethnic groups are present, including a significant Hui Muslim community in Langzhong. Nanchong serves as a vibrant cultural center for northeastern Sichuan. At the core of downtown Shunqing District lies Five Star Garden, a central traffic hub and landmark roundabout featuring five avenues branching out into the city. Leisure areas within the urban layout include features such as Nanchong White Tower Park.
Food culture is an important aspect of the city's local identity. Nanchong is renowned for guokui stuffed with jelly, a crispy baked bread filled with spicy, seasoned cold jelly. Rice noodles are also a staple, highlighted by Shunqing mutton rice noodles, which feature silky noodles immersed in an aromatic mutton broth. Additional local specialties include golden Yingshan cold noodles and naturally fermented steamed buns made with white sugar.
Nanchong experiences a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate characterized by elevated humidity year-round. Winters are brief and mild, whereas summers are long, hot, and humid. Daily mean temperatures span from 6.5 °C in January to 27.3 °C in July, with the majority of the annual rainfall occurring between May and September. Spring months tend to be warmer and daytime sunnier than the autumn season.
Functioning as a regional transit hub, Nanchong offers convenient travel links across China. It is serviced by National Highways 318 and 212, alongside expressways connecting to Chengdu and Guang'an. Major railway routes include the Dazhou–Chengdu and Chongqing–Lanzhou lines. Air travel is accommodated by Nanchong Gaoping Airport, which operates direct routes to major domestic cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Kunming, Xi'an, and Sanya.
