Why Nanping

Nanping is a prefecture-level city located in northwestern Fujian Province in southern China, sharing borders with Ningde to the east, Sanming to the south, Zhejiang Province to the north, and Jiangxi Province to the west. Set amid a landscape dominated by towering peaks, low mountains, river valleys, and small basins, the region encompasses part of the Wuyi Mountains range. This terrain reflects a traditional Chinese saying describing southern China as being composed of eight parts mountain, one part water, and one part farmland.

The historic core of Nanping sits on a hill near the point where Jianxi Brook joins the Min River. Surrounded by high stone walls that were historically designed to resist artillery fire and deter hostile forces during past conflicts, the scenic city retains a rich heritage, with the lily recognized as its official flower.

Administratively, the prefecture is divided into two urban districts—Yanping and Jianyang—as well as three county-level cities, which are Shaowu, Wuyishan, and Jian'ou, and five counties comprising Shunchang, Pucheng, Guangze, Songxi, and Zhenghe. According to the 2020 census, the population reached over 2.68 million people, with nearly 800,000 residing within the built-up metropolitan area of Yanping and Jianyang. By early 2025, the permanent population was recorded at approximately 2.623 million.

Nanping hosts several export-oriented industries, including the Fujian Nanping Nanfu Battery Company, which stands as the primary producer and supplier of alkaline batteries in mainland China. The region is accessible through an extensive transit infrastructure that includes sixteen high-speed rail and train stations. Among these key rail stops are Nanping City Station, Yanping Station, Wuyishan North Station, and Jianou West Station, along with numerous county and local stations.

The regional climate is humid subtropical, featuring short, mild winters alongside long, hot, and humid summers. Monthly 24-hour average temperatures vary from 9.7 °C in January to 28.7 °C in July, maintaining an annual mean of 19.5 °C. Precipitation exceeds 200 millimeters monthly between March and June before tapering off into early winter. Summer offers the highest proportion of sunshine, whereas late winter and spring are characteristically overcast and damp.
