Why Nanyang
Nanyang is a prefecture-level city in southwestern Henan province, China, occupying the largest administrative territory in the province. Situated within the Nanyang Basin, the area lies in the transitional geographic zone between the eastern end of the Qin Mountains and the headwaters of the Huai River, bordering both Hubei and Shaanxi provinces. Just north of the urban core sits Mount Du, known for its rare Dushan jade, while the Bai River flows directly through the city. To the southwest, Neixiang County encompasses the ecologically diverse Baotianman Biosphere Reserve.
The region possesses a deep history spanning early prehistoric human habitations, Neolithic settlements at Huangshan, and Erlitou culture sites. Historically serving as an important node along the Silk Road, Nanyang grew into a prominent national center for iron smelting during the Qin and Han dynasties, eventually serving as the southern capital during the Eastern Han era. Over the centuries, Nanyang was home to key historic figures, including the scientist Zhang Heng, the medical scholar Zhang Zhongjing, the merchant Fan Li, and the strategist Zhuge Liang.
Visitors to Nanyang can explore a diverse array of historic landmarks and cultural attractions. Important Han dynasty heritage sites include the Medical Saint Temple—home to Zhang Zhongjing's ancestral tomb—the grave of Zhang Heng, and the Art Museum of Stone Portrait and Carvings of Han Dynasty, which exhibits preserved portrait stones, bricks, and pottery. Historic spots connected to the Three Kingdoms period include Wolong Gang and Wuhou Temple, alongside civic architecture such as the Ming and Qing dynasty Nanyang Mansion. Across the wider municipality, points of interest include the historic town of Jingziguan, Neixiang County Mansion, the Sheqi Meeting Place, and natural destinations like the Funiu Shan World Geology Park, Danjiangkou Reservoir, and Tongbai Water-Curtain Cave Temple.
Nanyang features a four-season humid subtropical climate influenced by monsoons, resulting in cool, dry winters, hot and humid summers, and temperate transitional periods during spring and autumn. The city is accessible through several major rail lines, including the Zhengzhou–Wanzhou high-speed railway, with arrivals centered at stations such as Nanyang Railway Station and Nanyang East. Air connections are provided by Nanyang Jiangying Airport, which offers flights to major destinations including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Guilin. Within the city, local transport includes an extensive public bus system, natural gas taxis, and app-based bike-sharing services.
