If you are traveling through Northern Ireland along the scenic A2 road, make sure to stop by Narrow Water Castle, also known as Narrow Water Keep. Situated right on the County Down bank of the Clanrye River—just one mile north of Carlingford Lough—this site offers a fascinating glimpse into centuries of Irish history. Originally the location of a 13th-century Norman keep linked to Hugh de Lacy, the current tower house and surrounding bawn were constructed in the 1560s by the Magennis family.
When you visit, you will see a classic three-storey rectangular structure built with five-foot-thick walls that cleverly house internal stairs, closets, and latrines. As you explore, you will discover how the castle changed hands through the 1641 Irish Rebellion and Cromwellian conquest before being sold to the Hall family in the 1670s. In the 19th century, the Halls commissioned architect Thomas Duff to build a nearby Elizabethan revival-style mansion, which shares the same name.
Today, the 16th-century tower house is preserved in state care as a historic monument near Warrenpoint, while the 1800s estate house remains a private residence. It is a compelling destination for anyone intrigued by historic fortresses and regional heritage.
