If you are exploring Jung District in Daegu, South Korea, make sure to set aside time for National Debt Redemption Movement Memorial Park, also known as Gukchae Park. Constructed between March 1998 and December 1999, this expansive 42,500-square-meter park holds a deeply inspiring place in Korean history. You will find that it commemorates two major historic acts of national unity: the 1907 to 1908 National Debt Repayment Movement—an important Korean independence effort that actually originated right here in Daegu—and the 1998 gold-collecting campaign during the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

As you wander through the grounds, you can enjoy lush green spaces and pleasant walking areas. Key attractions you will want to see include the impressive Dalgubeol Grand Bell, which sits inside a pavilion constructed in December 1998, as well as several memorials honoring important historical Korean figures. You should also visit the National Debt Redemption Movement Memorial Museum, which opened in October 2011.

Spanning two stories above ground and two stories below ground, the museum offers a deeper look into these remarkable civic movements. Whether you want to reflect on local history or stroll through green parkland, this unique destination offers a meaningful stop on your Daegu journey.
