When you visit Liberty Square in Taipei, Taiwan, you will discover the twin landmarks known as the National Theater and Concert Hall (NTCH). Completed in 1987 on the south and north sides of the square, these pioneering performing arts venues are modern in function yet recall traditional elements of Chinese palace architecture. Inside, you can see four main performance venues: the 1,498-seat Proscenium Arch Theater, the flexible Experimental Theater, the 2,022-seat main Concert Hall, and the 354-seat Recital Hall.

At the time of its 1987 installation, the Concert Hall's Flentrop Orgelbouw pipe organ was the largest in Asia. Beyond the auditoriums, you can explore art galleries, libraries—including a Performing Arts Library—shops, and restaurants housed right within the structures. Outdoor performances and broadcasts are hosted on the NTCH Plaza, where massive crowds gather.

Over the years, the halls have welcomed famous international leaders like Margaret Thatcher and Betty Ford, alongside world-renowned artists like Yo-Yo Ma and Philip Glass, hosting everything from Broadway shows and opera to traditional Taiwanese drama.
