When exploring Berlin, Germany, you will find the historic Neptune Fountain (Neptunbrunnen), a striking monument built in 1891 and designed by Reinhold Begas. Standing 10 meters (33 feet) high with a diameter of 18 meters (59 feet), this impressive structure showcases the Roman god Neptune proudly positioned at its center. Surrounding Neptune are four allegorical female figures representing the four main rivers of Prussia at the time of its construction.

As you take in the artwork, look for the unique details paired with each river figure: the Elbe holds fruits and ears of corn, the Rhine features a fishnet and grapes, the Vistula is accompanied by wooden blocks symbolizing forestry, and the Oder is depicted with goats and animal skins. Beyond its detailed sculptures, the fountain offers a fascinating glimpse into regional history and geography; today, the Vistula lies entirely within Poland, whereas the Oder forms the border between Germany and Poland. Originally erected at the Schlossplatz, the fountain was removed in 1951 when the Berliner Schloss was demolished.

After undergoing restoration, it was moved in 1969 to its current location situated conveniently between St. Mary's Church and the Rotes Rathaus.
