Neu-Habsburg Castle 🇨🇭

Located along the scenic shore of Lake Lucerne in Meggen, Switzerland, Neuhabsburg Castle offers you a fascinating glimpse into Swiss history and architectural evolution. Originally constructed by the Habsburg family around 1244 or 1245, this historic site may have replaced the older Meggenhorn fort. While it possibly served as the summer home for Rudolph I, it primarily functioned as the administrative hub for a small Habsburg department overseeing surrounding areas like Weggis, Küssnacht, and Arth.

Over the centuries, the castle endured significant turmoil; it was damaged in 1245 after Pope Innocent IV excommunicated Frederick II, and later destroyed in 1352 when Lucerne joined the original Forest Cantons during the rise of the Old Swiss Confederacy. When you visit today, you will encounter a striking mix of old and new. You can observe original thirteenth-century remnants, including portions of a square main tower, a thick ring wall, and several other ruined structures.

Standing over these medieval remains is the current residence, which was constructed in 1871 in an elegant Gothic Revival style. Because Neuhabsburg Castle remains privately owned, it provides a quiet, historic stop where you can admire deep medieval roots against a beautiful lakeside background.
