Nestled on the scenic shore of Lake Lucerne in the Tribschen district, the Richard Wagner Museum offers you an intimate glimpse into the famous composer's life. Housed in a historic 15th-century manor house remodeled by the Am Rhyn family, this peaceful lakeside sanctuary is where Wagner lived from 1866 to 1872. Funded by King Ludwig II of Bavaria—who even paid a secretive incognito visit here—Wagner found inspiration in these rooms to complete masterworks like Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Siegfried, while also working on Götterdämmerung.
It was also here that his Siegfried Idyll was first performed on the villa stairs as a Christmas morning birthday gift for his wife, Cosima. When you visit today, you can explore five ground-floor rooms packed with historical photographs, paintings, memorabilia, and original manuscripts. You will marvel at a bronze bust crafted by Fritz Schaper and Wagner’s prized 1858 Erard grand piano.
This historic villa, opened as a museum in 1933 and surrounded by parkland that hosted the very first Lucerne Festival concert in 1938, lets you step directly into a monumental era of music history right along the lake.
