Why New Cairo
New Cairo is an expansive modern satellite city situated in Egypt's Eastern Desert, positioned directly east of the Cairo Ring Road and Nasr City. Set on an elevated plateau ranging between 250 and 307 meters above sea level, the urban area spans nearly 100,000 acres within the Greater Cairo metropolitan region. Established in 2000 following a 1995 presidential decree, the municipality was created to alleviate traffic congestion and population density in central Cairo by decentralizing economic activity and housing.
Administratively organized into three police districts—New Cairo First, Second, and Third—the territory is governed jointly by the Cairo Governorate and the New Urban Communities Authority. Prior to construction, the site contained three informal settlements whose residents were displaced as land was sold to private developers. Developed as a hub for upper-income residents, New Cairo features planned gated communities, private university campuses, international schools, and modern corporate offices.
Visitors and residents find a wide range of commercial and leisure destinations spread throughout the city. Situated near the entrance is Cairo Festival City, a 285-hectare complex featuring gardens, walking paths, swimming pools, corporate offices, a major shopping mall, and a dancing fountain. Dozens of other retail complexes operate across the district, including Point 90 Mall, Downtown Kattameya, Emerald Plaza, Garden 8, and the WaterWay commercial centers. Geologically significant terrain lies immediately to the south at the Petrified Forest Protected Area, a designated natural reserve.
For sports and outdoor recreation, the city offers several specialized venues. The Kattameya area contains a championship golf course along with tennis courts. Football enthusiasts can attend events at Petrosport Stadium, which hosts ENPPI SC, or 30 June Stadium, home to Pyramids FC. Additional athletic developments include local clubs named after the Katameya and 1st Settlement districts, alongside a branch of Al Ahly SC under construction in the eastern sector.
Transportation throughout New Cairo relies on an extensive network of buses, with a monorail line under construction to link the area with Nasr City to the west and the New Administrative Capital to the east. Administrative services are consolidated in the southern district within a unified three-floor Traffic Administration facility, while drinking water for the population is piped from a treatment plant in neighboring Obour City.
