Why New Rochelle

New Rochelle is a suburban city in Westchester County, New York, situated along the shoreline of Long Island Sound at the southeastern tip of continental New York State. Located approximately 17 miles from Midtown Manhattan and two miles north of the New York City border, this triangular coastal municipality covers roughly 13 square miles. Known historically for its planned residential neighborhoods and nicknamed the "City of Homes," the destination blends maritime access with significant cultural heritage, served centrally by a Metro-North railroad station.

The area was originally inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous Lenape peoples who made use of the rich coastal and inland resources. In 1688, French Huguenot refugees established the community on land acquired from English settler Thomas Pell, naming the colony after La Rochelle, France. The settlement retained a distinct French character for generations. Following the American Revolutionary War, patriot Thomas Paine was awarded a farm in the town, and over the 19th and 20th centuries, the community transitioned from agricultural land into a growing suburban center.

Visitors exploring the city's historic places can visit the Thomas Paine Historical Site, which encompasses Paine's 1793 cottage, a memorial museum, his burial monument, and the Brewster Schoolhouse, one of the region's oldest structures. Hudson Park marks the original landing location of the Huguenot founders and displays a monument bearing their names. On Huguenot Street, Trinity-St. Paul's Episcopal Church represents the early congregation chartered in the 18th century. Other architectural landmarks include Leland Castle, a 19th-century Gothic Revival structure that houses a public art gallery, and Lincoln Park, a historic hub along the African American Heritage Trail of Westchester County.

Along the waterfront and offshore in Long Island Sound, notable features dot the waters. Out in the sound, the 1849 Execution Rocks Lighthouse features a 55-foot tower originally built to warn mariners away from shallow rocks. Nearby Huckleberry Island acts as a sanctuary and nesting ground for waterbirds, including night herons and egrets, while Columbia Island lies nearby. In town, modern recreational options are gathered at New Roc City, a major downtown entertainment complex housing an IMAX theater, a 19-screen cinema, an indoor ice hockey arena, mini-golf, go-karts, an arcade, and several dining establishments.
