Why Newark
Newark is a city located in Alameda County, California, along the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area. Completely enclosed by the neighbouring city of Fremont, Newark forms part of the regional Tri-City Area alongside Fremont and Union City. Covering roughly 13.9 square miles of land near the southern reach of the bay, it stands as an urban enclave within the broader Silicon Valley economy.
The region was originally home to the Ohlone Native American people prior to European settlement, which began with Spanish missionaries from Mission San José. The town was surveyed and subdivided in 1878 by the Pacific Land Investment Company, taking its name from Scotland's Newark Castle. Concerns over potential annexation by nearby Hayward prompted local residents to incorporate Newark as an independent city in September 1955, shortly before Fremont completed its own incorporation.
Throughout the twentieth century, Newark developed an industrial base that produced stoves, glass-lined water heaters, semi-trailers, and heavy trucks. Today, its economic landscape includes a major salt refinery operated by Cargill Salt, which processes product harvested from local evaporation ponds in the bay. The city is also home to commercial and research hubs, including the NewPark Mall shopping complex and the Pacific Research Center campus.
Visitors and residents have access to thirteen municipal parks and outdoor sports areas. A primary recreational destination is the George M. Silliman Community Activity and Family Aquatic Center, which features an extensive indoor facility complete with an activity pool, water slides, a lazy river, lap lanes, and a warm-water spa. A section of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge also extends into Newark's boundaries. Each September, the community gathers at the Macgregor Soccer fields to celebrate the city's anniversary during the multi-day Newark Days festival.
Newark is conveniently situated near major transit routes, including Interstate 880 and State Route 84, which extends westward across the San Francisco Bay via the Dumbarton Bridge toward Menlo Park. Local public transit service is provided by AC Transit buses, while rail connections, including BART, ACE, and Amtrak services, are accessible in the surrounding community of Fremont. Higher education facilities in the city include a campus of Ohlone College.
