Why Newburgh
Newburgh is a city situated on the western bank of the Hudson River in Orange County, New York, within the Hudson Valley region. Positioned approximately 60 miles north of New York City and 90 miles south of Albany, it serves as a principal city for the surrounding metropolitan area. The municipality is bordered by the town of Newburgh to the north and west, the town of New Windsor along Quassaick Creek to the south, and the Hudson River to the east. Across the water, the Newburgh–Beacon Bridge connects the city to neighboring Beacon, while Stewart International Airport operates nearby.
Originally inhabited by the Waoranek people of the Lenape, the riverbank was explored by Henry Hudson in 1609. Following settlement by Palatine refugees in 1709 and its official naming in 1752, the community grew into a active river port. Newburgh played a key historical role during the American Revolution, serving as the headquarters for General George Washington and the Continental Army from April 1782 to August 1783. While stationed at the Hasbrouck farmhouse, Washington rejected a proposal to become king, resolved the military dispute known as the Newburgh Conspiracy, and issued the official order ending Revolutionary War hostilities.
Chartered as a city in 1865, Newburgh developed into a prominent industrial and transportation hub during the nineteenth century. The city served as an influential center for the American Gothic Revival architectural movement, shaped by native designer Andrew Jackson Downing alongside English architects Calvert Vaux and Frederick Clarke Withers. Preserved historical sights throughout the area include Washington's Headquarters—which became the nation's first publicly owned historic site in 1850—as well as the David Crawford House, the Dutch Reformed Church, the New York State Armory, the old city courthouse, and the Newburgh Colored Burial Ground.
Newburgh features an expansive main street, Broadway, which spans 132 feet in width and leads toward views of the Hudson River. Situated on bluffs overlooking the water, open grassy slopes created during late-twentieth-century urban renewal projects offer broad vistas of the river and the Hudson Highlands to the south. The city is also home to Mount Saint Mary College. Over its history, notable figures such as Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert F. Kennedy, and the Marquis de Lafayette visited or established connections to the community.
