Why Ningde
Ningde is a coastal prefecture-level city situated along the northeastern shore of Fujian, China. Facing the East China Sea with nearly 200 kilometers of coastline, it borders Fuzhou to the south, Wenzhou to the north, and Nanping to the west. Spanning 13,500 square kilometers roughly 300 kilometers north of the Tropic of Cancer, the region features a mix of coastal lowlands and mountainous inland areas, earning recognition for its high environmental standing.
Human presence in the area dates back up to 20,000 years to the late Upper Palaeolithic period and the Stamped Pottery Culture System, with formal magistrate administration established during the Jin Dynasty in 282. Today, the local population primarily speaks Eastern Min. Ningde is also the primary residential region for the She minority, who constitute about a quarter of its inhabitants and maintain a rich heritage of documented folk tales, traditional songs, and proverbs. The area experiences a warm, moist, humid subtropical climate with occasional typhoons, average annual temperatures between 13.4 and 20.2 degrees Celsius, and annual precipitation ranging from 1,250 to 2,350 millimeters.
Natural features and scenic landscapes form a major aspect of the region. Established in 2015 within a volcanic coastal setting, the Ningde UNESCO Global Geopark encompasses the Baishuiyang, Taimushan, and Baiyunshan scenic areas. Visitors to the region can also view numerous historic covered bridges, particularly in Pingnan County, or visit the 15,000-capacity Ningde Stadium.
Cultural arts flourish across the prefecture through vibrant traditional performances and handicrafts. Notable folk customs include the bantieji parade featuring costumed children on festive floats during the Chinese New Year, rope-operated puppet lion dances around Huotong Town and Jiaocheng District, and intricate paper art in Zherong County.
The fertile land supports long-standing agricultural traditions, most prominently tea cultivation producing famous varieties such as Tianshan Silver-Needle and Baihao Silver-Needle. Local harvests also feature mushrooms, bamboo, and diverse fruits, while shallow coastal waters foster aquaculture producing yellow croakers, oysters, razor clams, prawns, and freshwater eels. Additionally, Ningde's economy encompasses mineral extraction like granite and basalt, power generation, metallurgy, shipbuilding, and battery manufacturing.
