Why Norwalk

Norwalk is a city in Los Angeles County, California, situated approximately 17 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Covering roughly ten square miles, it forms part of the Greater Los Angeles area and belongs to the Gateway Cities Council of Governments. The municipality shares borders with several neighboring communities, including Downey to the northwest, Bellflower to the southwest, Cerritos and Artesia to the south, and Santa Fe Springs and Whittier to the north and east.

The region was originally home to Shoshonean Native Americans living in the village of Sejat, who sustained themselves on native berries, acorns, honey, and local game. Spanish colonization brought the El Camino Real trail through the district, and the land became part of the Rancho Los Nietos grant in 1784. Following the Mexican-American War, portions of the territory were subdivided. In 1869, the Sproul brothers purchased land in the area known as Corazón de los Valles, subsequently arranging for a railroad passenger stop and officially registering the name Norwalk in 1874.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Norwalk flourished as an agricultural hub featuring cheese production, extensive sugar beet farms, and thriving dairies that attracted many Dutch settlers. Local history is preserved across several notable landmarks. The 1870 Sproul House, constructed by town founder Gilbert Sproul, operates today as the Gilbert Sproul Museum, housing historic photos, documents, and artifacts. The Hargitt House Museum, built in 1891, showcases Victorian Eastlake architecture, while the nearby Little Lake Cemetery serves as the final resting place for many of the town's early founding families.

Following its incorporation in 1957, Norwalk shifted into an increasingly residential community with a expanding Hispanic population. Educational institutions in the area include Cerritos College, which has the eastern half of its campus positioned within the city's borders.

Norwalk is well connected to the surrounding region by major freeways, including Interstate 5, Interstate 605, and Interstate 105. Visitors and commuters can navigate the area using Norwalk Transit and Long Beach Transit bus lines, the Los Angeles Metro C Line light rail system, or Metrolink rail services on the Orange County and 91/Perris Valley routes.
