Why Oak Park

Oak Park is an inner-ring suburban city located in Oakland County, Michigan, approximately 14 miles (22.5 kilometers) northwest of downtown Detroit. Covering a total area of 5.16 square miles (13.36 square kilometers), all of which is land, the community sits adjacent to Detroit's northern boundary along 8 Mile Road. The city shares borders with Southfield to the west, Berkley to the north, Huntington Woods to the northeast, and Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, and Royal Oak Township to the east.

European Americans first settled the region in 1840, though it remained thinly populated for several decades as part of Royal Oak Township. The area's initial major residential expansion occurred in 1914 with the construction of the Oak Park subdivision. The settlement incorporated as a village in 1927 and officially became a city in 1945 following World War II. Supported by post-war programs such as the GI Bill, highway development, and planned housing projects, the population expanded sevenfold from 5,000 to over 36,000 between 1950 and 1960, earning it recognition as the fastest-growing city in the nation. Many residents during this boom period were second- and third-generation descendants of European immigrants, including a prominent Orthodox Jewish community.

The municipal area is accessed by key transportation routes. Interstate 696 forms the northern border of the city, separating it from Huntington Woods and Royal Oak where the Detroit Zoo is situated on the northern side of the freeway. Michigan Route 102 (8 Mile Road) defines the entire southern boundary along the county line, while the John C. Lodge Freeway (M-10) serves as a primary roadway nearby. Economic infrastructure includes local commercial developments, regional distribution centers built on former military sites, and local businesses that serve food and beverages.

Public recreational amenities in the city include Shepherd Park, historically known as Major Park or Oak Park Park, which was enhanced during the mid-twentieth century with the addition of an ice rink and an outdoor swimming pool. Educational coverage for local households is divided across three public school systems, with most of the city served by Oak Park Schools, while northern and eastern sections fall within the Berkley and Ferndale school districts.
